Summary: School Feeding continues despite shelter-in-place

Davidson County Schools, Thomasville City Schools and Lexington City Schools all continued to provide meals during the shelter-in-place mandate.

Davidson County Schools began with meals for pick-up at various school locations, and then eventually in mid-March started delivering lunches along the bus routes.

Thomasville City Schools provided drive-thru meal breakfasts - once a week - each student was provided a packet of meals (6 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners. (USDA program)). Just before spring break, students were provided double the meals to compensate for the break closure.

During this time 3000 to 3,500 boxed meals were being distributed weekly, although there are only 2,300 students in the school system. TCS suspects that the meals were reaching student siblings and out into the county.

Lexington YMCA partnered with CIS Lexington to supplement Lexington City Schools breakfast and lunch meals with dinner meal pick up and delivery. During spring break, Journey Church and Renaissance Church delivered meals during the break to prevent a break in meal service. City of Lexington took advantage of the meal delivery service to continue the census awareness campaign.
