The Seven Sisters Farm is run by Janice and Michael Fine, representing the next generation of farmers - young energetic and experimental. Janice grew up in agriculture. Her family manages 300-acre fields that concentrate on select vegetables, whereas Seven Sisters Farm is an example of a smaller market garden farm which was initially only 2 acres. They have grown their farm from 2 acres to 10 acres. A market garden style farm suits smaller acreage, and the planting schedule is designed to grow produce to sell directly to consumers at farmers markets and CSAs as opposed to the wholesale market or the global supply system. They began with 2 acres and have since grown to managing 10 acres. What Michael and Janice discovered was that the farming strategy that Janice grew up with did not work with a smaller farm structure, and the two of them had to pivot their farming strategies to suit the smaller acreage.
Seven Sisters Farm was one of the first farms to participate in our inaugural tour in 2018. They have really expanded their operation since then. Michael and Janice Fine often mentor new farmers and this year was one of the farms selected as a model farm for new farmers on the NC Farm School program. They have led workshops and provide consulting for other farms regionally.
Seven Sisters Farm is an excellent example of season extension farming of diverse crops, and an excellent farm layout demonstrating land planning and harvest strategy. They boast a large variety of season vegetables, herbs, vegetable and flower plants. They have a strong commitment to selling their products to their local community, and to feed their local community. The site is also used for workshops as they contribute to advancing and growing the local agriculture trade.
