From the time they’re born until they reach full maturity, the cows on Jeff Boyst’s 100-year-old farm, BN Acres, graze on nothing but grass. Depending on the season, the herd of about fifty Charolais cattle enjoy a rotating crop of rye, millet, fescue, orchard grass, and sorghum-sudan grass. Boyst took over his family’s farm when his grandfather passed away in 2007.
The Charolais breed is one of the oldest of the French cattle breeds, native to the Charles region in France. Boyst’s grandfather selected this breed because of the healthier aspect of leaner beef. Boyst’s beef is purely grass-fed and grass-finished and so, his product is naturally leaner than grain-finished cows.
The cattle graze over 100+ acres of pasture on grasses indigenous to the region. Through careful planning, BN Acres have a strong and healthy herd that was built to thrive in the varying Piedmont NC climate.
BN Acres has grown into a sustainable homestead-style farm raising not only Charolais cattle, but sheep, donkeys, seasonal fruits, nuts and occasional vegetables. Meet the Boyst family and enjoy the tour that runs every 30 minutes.
